Monica: there is nothing to tell. He’s just some guy i work with.

Joey: come on, you are going out with the guy! There is gotta be something wrong with him.

Chandler: so does he have a hump? A hump and hairpiece?

hump뜻: 낙타 등의 혹 따위.

Phoebe: wait. Does he eat chalk? Just cause i don’t want her to 1)go through what i went through with carl.                                                              (겪다. 경험하다...)

Monica: okay. Everybody relax. This is not even a date. Just two people going out to dinner and not having sex.

Chandler: sounds like date to me.

-coming through(사람 많은 곳 등을 통과할 때 자주 쓰는 말)

through란 표현을 자주 쓰는데

구어체에서 상황을 극복하거나, 경험할 때, 음료를 마시거나 뭔가를 끝냈다는 의미.

특히 시련을 극복했다는 의미로 많이 쓰이는 듯.

Chandler: so. Alright. 2) I’m back in highschooll, i’m standing in the middle of the cafeteria, and i realized i am totally naked. Then i look down, and i realized there is a phone..there…

Joey: instead of?

Chandler: that’s right. All of a sudden, the phone starts to ring, and it turns out it’s my mother, which is very very weird, because she never calls me.

2)I'm back in highschool뜻

고교시절, 학창시절

 평소 일상에서 학창 시절 이야기는 엄청 자주 하게 됨.

프렌즈에서도 학창시절 이야기는 단골 에피소드.

Ross: hi.

Joey: this guy says hello. I wanna kill myself.

Monica: are you okay sweetie?

Ross: i just feel like someone reached down my throat, grabbed my 3)small intestine, pulled it out of my mouth and tied it around my neck….

Chandler: cookie?

Monica: carol moved her stuff out today. Let me get you some coffee.

Ross: thanks.

3)small intestine뜻은 소장.

위 문장은 해석하면 엄청 잔인함.

누군가 자신의 목구멍에 도착해 자신의 소장을 잡고 자신의 입 밖으로 밀어내며 목을 조인다는 등의

기분을 느낀다는 표현인데 너무 끔찍함. 

Ross: no. No. No don’t stop cleansing my aura. No, just leave my aura alone okay?

로스가 치는 대사들은 한결같이 셰익스피어의 구절을 읽는 기분.

자신의 아우라를 치우지 말라니...

하는 피비나 말리는 로스나...ㅎㅎ 둘이 인연 같은데

절대 상극이라니...ㅎㅎ

         I’ll be fine alright? Really everyone, i hope she will be very happy.

Monica: no. You don’t

Ross: no i don’t 4) to hell with her. She left me.

4) to hell with her

그녀와 함께 지옥으로?

th hell with her뜻은 그녀가 뭘하든 될대로 되라지. 어찌되든 말든의 의미.

Joey: and you never knew she was lesbian.

Ross: no. Okay? Why does everyone keep 5)fixating on that? She didn’t know. How should i know?

                                                                                                  그녀도 몰랐는데 내가 어찌 알았겠어?

5)fixating on뜻은 집착하다.

Chandler: sometime I wish I was lesbian. Did I say that out loud?

Joey: alright ross. Look you are feeling a lot of pain right now. You are angry. You are hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?

         Strip joint. Come on. You are single. 6)Have some hormones!

프렌즈를 엄청 재미나게 봤고, 덕분에 영어에 흥미를 느꼈다고 생각했는데

요즘 다시 보니 영어 공부는 하나도 안 된 상태였다는 걸 깨닫고 있는 중.

6)have some hormones!이란 표현을 요즘 쓴다면 좀 진부하지 않을까 싶긴 하지만

이성을 사겨라, 욕구를 채워라 이런 의미..

Ross: i don’t want to be single. Okay? I just… i just wanna be married again.

Chandler: and i just wanna million dollars!

Monica: rachel?

Rachel: oh, god. Monica hi. Thank god. I just went to your building and you weren’t there and then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are. You are.

여담이지만 레이첼 연기 정말 잘 하는 것 같음.

말의 속도가 너무 빨라서 이해하기 너무 힘든데 발음이 정확해서 몇 번 들으면 이해가 됨.

반면에 로스는 속도가 느린데도 몇 번을 들어도 못 알아 먹겠음.

조이의 경우는 속어 표현을 많이 써서 그런지 이해 수준 불가.

영어 공부할 때 발음 속도 제일 이해하기 쉬운 캐릭터는 모니카.

다음 챈들러.

레이첼은 마스터하면 완전 원어민 수준 될 듯.

또 여담으로 말하면

영자막을 봐도 틀린 경우가 많아 이것저것 찾아보며 꼼꼼하게 확인해야겠다 싶음.

another 인지 and her 인지 등....헷갈림.

둘 다 맞는 표현 같기도 하고.

Waitress: can I get you some coffee?

Monica: de caff. Okay everybody? This is rachel another lincoln 7)high school survivor. This is everybody, this is chandler, and phoebe, and joey, and you remember my brother ross?

survivor뜻은 생존자란 뜻인데

하이스쿨 서바이버란 표현이 참 마음에 듦.

동창이란 표현보다 훨 나은 거 같음.

Rachel: hi. Sure.

Monica: so you wanna tell us now or are we waiting for four wet bridesmaids?

Raches: oh god… well… it started about a half hour before wedding. I was in the room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat . When all of a sudden… sweet ’n’ lo?-

 i realized that i was more 8)turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! 

                                      배리보다 그레이비 보트를 중심으로 여겼다.

       8) turned on 뜻은 ~을 중심으로 하다.

And then i got really 9)freak out, and that’s when it hit me. 

9)freak out 뜻은 단순 흥분하다기 보다 격앙된... 일상에서 광분했다 혹은 확돌았잖아 등의 의미.

레이첼 말은 흥분해서 정신이 번쩍 들었다 그런 의미로 해석.

How much barry looks like mr. Potato head. You know, I mean I always knew looked familiar, but… anyway, i just had to get out of there, and I started wondering

 ‘why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for? 

난 여기서 뭘하고 있는 건지 누굴 위해 있는 건지 ..등의 자괴감을 표현한 내용.

내가 여기서 뭘하고 있는 거지?

So anyway I just didn’t know where to go, and I know that you and I have kind a 10)drifted apart, but you are the only person I knew who lived here in the city.

10)Drifted apart 뜻 사이가 멀어지다.

Monica: who wasn’t invited to the wedding.

Rachel: ooh, I was kind a hoping that wouldn’t be an issue.

그 말은 꺼내지 않길 바랬었는데.

Monica: now 11)I'm guessing that he bought her the big pipe organ, and she’s really not happy about it.

11) I'm guessing은 곧바로 일어날 일을 예상 혹은 추측한다는 의미.

특히 영화나 드라마 등을 볼 때 예상 장면을 얘기할 때 적절한 표현.

Rachel: daddy, I just.. I can’t marry him. I’m sorry, I just don’t love him. Well, it matters to me.

                                                                                                                              내겐 중요한 일이라고.

Chendler: ooh, she should not be wearing those pants.

Joey: I say push her down the stairs.

Rachel: come on daddy, 12)listen to me, it’s like all of my life, everyone has always told me, you are a shoe, 

12)listen to me는 아무리 들어도 리슨앤미로 들림.

to 발음이 거의 들리지 않고 n이 먹어버림.

t발음은 n으로 많이 들림.

t보다 n이 강하다.

you are a shoe, and today I just stoped and I said what if i don’t wanna be a shoe? What if I wanna be a a purse, you know? Or a hat . No I’m  not saying I want you to buy me a hat, I’m saying I am a hat..it’s metaphor daddy.

Ross: you can wee where he’d have trouble.

Rachel: look daddy. it’s my life. Well maybe I’ll just stay here with monica.

Monica: well, I established who’s staying here with monica.

Rachel: well, maybe my dicision. Well maybe I don’t need your money.wait! Wait! I said maybe.

Monica: just breathe, breathe… that’s it, just try to think of nice, calm things…

Phoebe: sing..

Rachel: I am all better now.

Phoebe: I helped.

Monica: okay. Look, this is probably for the best you know? Independence, taking control of your life. 

Joey: and hey, you need anything, you can always come to joey. Me and chandler live across the hall, and he’s away a lot.

그는 집에 잘 없어.

부재가 잦아.

출타가 잦아.

집에 거의 없어.

Monica: joey, stop 13)hitting on her. It’s her wedding day.

13)hitting on뜻은 추근덕거리다. 수작을 걸다. 찝적대다.

Joey: what, like there’s a rule or something?

Chendler:please don’t do that again, its a horrible sound.

Paul: it’s a paul.

Monica: buz him in.

Joey: you are not a real date tonight it with paul the wine guy?

Ross: he finally asked you out?

Monica: yes.

Chendler: oh, this is a 14)dear diary moment.

14)Dear Diary Moment 뜻은 기념할 날, 기록하고 싶은 날 등으로 표현. 

Monica: rach, wait, i can cancel…

Rechel: please, no, go, that’s be fine.

Monica: are, are you okay? I mean, do you want me to stay?

Ross: that’d be good.

Monica: really?

Ross: no, go on, it’s paul the wine guy.

Phoebe:oh, i just pulled out four eyelashes. That can’t be good.

                                                                      안 좋은 징조야.

Ross: so rachel, what’re you.. What’re you 15)up to tonight?

 what are you going tonight은 오늘 밤에 뭐 할거니라면

up to를 쓰면 오늘 밤까지 뭐 할 거니?.

Rachel: well, i was kinda 16)supposed to be 17)headed for aruba on my honeymoon, so nothing.

16)be supposted to뜻은 원래 ~하기로 되어 있는데

되게 자주 쓰는 표현 같음.

17)headed for뜻은 ~로 향하다, ~할 운명이다 뜻.

Ross: right, you’re not even getthing your ..honeymoon, god, no. No, although, aruba, this time of year.. 

                                                                                                                                         매년 이맘 때 즈음이면...

Talk about your… big lizards… anyway, if you don’t feel like being alone tonight, Joey and chandler are

coming over to help me put together my new funiture.

Chandler: yes, and we’re very excited about it.

Rachel: well actually thanks, but i think i’m just gonna hang out here tonight, it’s been kinda a long day.

Ross: okay, sure.

Joey: hey, pheebs, you wanna help?

Phoebe: oh, I wish I could, but I don’t want to.

나도 그러고 싶었지만 나는 원하지 않아.

궤변 같지만 재치있는 표현.

Paul: i know, i know, i’m such an idiot. I guess i should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five times a week, i mean, how clean can teeth get?

Monica: my brother’s going through that right now, he’s such a mess. How did you get through it?

Paul: well, you might try accidentally breaking something valuable of hers, say her…

Rachel: barry, i’m sorry, i’m so sorry i know you probably think that this is all about what i said the other day about you making love with your socks on, but it isn’t.. It isn’t, it’s about me, it’s not me. And not that i have any idea who me is right now, but you just have to give me a chance too…

Rachel: isn’t this amazing? I mean, i have never coffee before in my entire life.

Joey : listen, while you’re 18)on a roll, if you feel like you gotta make like a western omelet or something…although actually i’m really not that hungry.

18) on a roll뜻은 운이 좋은 김에, 승승장구하는 마당에

상승세를 타는 중이니까.

Rachel: so, like, you guys all have jobs?

Monica: yeah, we all have jobs, see, that’s how we buy stuff.

Joey: i’m an actor.

Rachel: wow! Would I have seen you in anything?

내가 본 적이 있겠지?

Joey: i doubt it. Mostly regional work.

Frannie: are you kidding? I take credit for paul. You know before me, there was no snap in his turtle for two years.

Joey: of course he was a line.

    line이 수작 부리다, 거짓말 한 거다, 등으로 쓰일 줄은.

꾀어 내려고 거짓을 말하다 같은?

Monica: why, why would anybody do something like that?

Rachel: are you kidding? I’m trained for nothing. I was laughed out of twelve interview today.

Chendler: how’ well you know me.

어떻게 나를 그렇게 잘 알지?

Monica: come on, you can’t live off your parents your whole life.

Rachel: i know that, that’s why i was getting married.

                                                    Phoebe: give her a break, it’s hard being on your own for the first time.

그녀에게 시간을 줘

Rachel: thank you.

Phoebe: you’re welcome. I remember when i first came to this city. I was fourteen. My mom had just killed herself and my stepdad was back in prison, and i got here, and i didn’t know anybody.

Ross: the word you’re looking for is anyway…

Monica: that’s it. You gonna crash on the couch?

                         소파에서 자고 갈꺼야?

Ross: no, no, i gotta go home sometime.

Ross: split it?

       나눌까?

Rachel: okay.

Ross: you know you probably didn’t know this, but back in high school, i had a,,, um.. 19)Major crush on you.

Rachel: i knew.

Ross: you did.. Oh, i always 20)figured you just thought i was monica’s geeky older brother.

Rachel: i did.
